Prof. Jintu Fan's research group at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is one of the leading teams studying how heat stress, human thermoregulation, and advanced performance fabrics interact. Their work combines textile science, heat and mass transfer, physiology, materials engineering, and wearable technology. Fan's lab focuses on understanding the interactions between: • The human body and its heat production • Clothing systems • Surrounding environmental conditions The goal is to develop fabrics and garments that improve thermal comfort, reduce heat stress, and enhance physical performance and safety. Besides learning about advanced fabrics, we will have an opportunity to visit human thermal comfort testing systems that are widely aligned with international textile and clothing-performance standards. This includes in 2004, the world’s first “sweating” manikin – Walter, which can simulate human perspiration and be used to test the thermal insulation and moisture vapour resistance of functional clothing. Walter is a life-sized, heated mannequin that can: • Simulate human body temperature (~37°C) • Produce artificial sweat across the entire body • Wear real garments • Simulate walking motion • Measure clothing thermal insulation o ASTM F1291 (Thermal insulation of clothing systems) • Measure moisture-vapor resistance o ASTM F2370 (Evaporative resistance of clothing) Registration: Please contact Ms Stella Wong or Ms Daisy Luk at 2332 9210 for details.
